Date: 2009-10-23 Description:This activity was organised by the teacher Estela Díaz http://www.eleyole.blogspot.com/ as a part of a B1 class to practice the Imperative.
The inventions:
One of the multiple uses of the Imperativo (imperative) is to give instructions/commands. One of the best ways to practice is to create a machine, like some of our students have done, and explain how it works with instructions.
This activity can be performed in pairs or small groups.

A few days ago, while we reviewed the past tenses, it occured to me to suggest to my students to create a dramatization of a known exercise from the book "Rápido, rápido" by the publisher Difusión. The original activity consists in completing a story using the appropriate past tenses. After the first step, I then had them write three dialogues to match the three encounters of the story. One of my students, Mei, proposed to also write the main character's monologue which I thought was a fantastic idea. The 4 students worked together to write the three dialogues and the monlogue. The next step was to role-play the story and record it on video.
The idea of role-playing was well-received and the casting of the roles set up. We had a couple of reading rehearsals and the filming of the video you're about to see began the next day. That day, I was only a mere observer since the students were in charge of deciding how to record, what to record and what changes needed to be made to the text (script) they had written. As you can see, they had drawn a kitchen on the blackboard, used their imagination and made the most of the objects found in the classroom. My only job in the production was to edit the video afterwards.
The final result turned out to be incredibly good! Judging from the resulting video, I think the students reviewed the past tenses in a creative and fun way. We learned, we had fun, and we got to know each other better... what more is there to ask for?
I would like to thank Mei, Violeta, Paul and Simón for their interest and effort put forth in this proyect. Thank you guys, I hope you like it!
Oh! And don't miss the bloopers/outtakes... they're really fun!
Estela
