Autumn is an excellent
time to visit Spain. The temperature
is pleasant with warm days and cooler nights, and as always
there are plenty of activities on offer!
This month, we turn our attention to Spain’s second largest city, Barcelona!
Barcelona is located on the north-eastern
coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the
Mediterranean Sea. With a population of 1,510,000, Barcelona
boasts a rich and diverse culture. In our What’s On section
this month, find out how the people of nearby Saduni
d’Anoia celebrate being the
largest producers of cava in Barcelona! Try out our recipe
of the month, Arroz Negro, a popular Catalonian dish. For excellent up to date
information on Barcelona, our URL section offers you links to pages dedicated to this
modern and stimulating city.
In our Special dQ UK News section for September, we are excited to tell you
about the Information evening to be
followed by the famous El Sarao Fiesta! Don’t miss our other
regular features, including some popular wisdom,
a new ‘piropo’
and of course your monthly slang survival kit. We hope you enjoy September’s newsletter.
If you get the chance to visit Barcelona this month, we look
forward to hearing all about it!
See you next in October!
¡Hasta pronto!

Some popular wisdom to start with: from El
Quijote
If your feeling a little low as the summer
draws to an end, El Quijote has some advice to help lift your
spirits:
Quien canta, sus males espanta.
He who sings frightens away his ills.

Barcelona Cava Week 2005 – Combine
it with a weekend course
Barcelona, Spain’s second largest
city, is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
It is a modern, cosmopolitan and vibrant city with a
wealth of culture, history, and atmosphere. There are two
official languages in the region, Catalan and Castillian
Spanish. Although there is quite a difference between the two,
most of the locals are fluent in both. Throughout the year,
Barcelona is a lively city, with a host of activities on offer
to all of its visitors. In autumn,
the neighbouring town of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia celebrates being
the largest producer of Cava, a
Spanish sparkling wine made using the Champagne method. This
year, from the 9th until the 17th of October, there’ll be
a week of
dinners, concerts, ceremonies and a
300-person bicycle race.
The festivities are kicked off with the
crowning of the ‘Cava Queen’ who arrives with her ladies in waiting, accompanied by
a mounted brigade of the Barcelona Police!
For those of you who have not yet had the
pleasure of experiencing the distinctively fruity and earthy
aroma of Cava, on the 12th of October, 1000 people will board
the Cava train in Barcelona, and set off on the short trip to
Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. If you’re lucky enough to be
one of them, you’ll be joined at the station by an
enthusiastic bunch of carnival characters who will escort
passengers to the town hall and Cava Houses. After a tour of
the cellars, followed by lunch and entertainment, you’ll
return to the Catalan capital.
As luck and good planning would have it, our weekend break to Barcelona on the 14th of
October coincides with Cava week! You
can fly to the Catalan capital for the weekend and brush up on
your Spanish with three enjoyable morning classes. You’ll
finish by 1:00 each day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the
festivities of Cava week and put your new grammar and
vocabulary into practice!

Arroz Negro con Alioli
Black Rice with Garlic Sauce)
The historical culinary tradition
of Catalonia has played an important role in
Barcelona’s cuisine. Why not try this popular
Catalonian dish made from fresh calamari. (Although
Valencians may dispute its origin!)
Ingredients for 6 servings:
1kg small squid with ink sacs
1 onion, chopped
4 tomatoes, peeled, de-seeded and
chopped
400g rice
1 litre hot fish stock or water
50 ml sherry
Cooked prawns and/or muscles
For the sauce:
3 garlic cloves, crushed
100 ml olive oil
1 egg
|
|
Method:
Clean the squid, reserving the ink
sacs and either leave whole (if small) or cut into
pieces. Heat some oil in a pan and heat the onion and
peppers. Add the squid and tomatoes and cook for a few
minutes. Pour in 100ml of the stock and cook for about
twenty minutes to reduce the sauce. Add the rice and
mix well. Pour in most of the remaining stock, add a
pinch of cayenne and leave to simmer while you crush
the ink sacs in a separate bowl and mix with the
sherry. Add this to the rice and let it continue
cooking, either on the stovetop or in the oven, until
the rice is soft. Leave to rest for several minutes
before serving. Serve with the other cooked seafood on
top and a bowl of the alioli for spooning over.
To make the sauce, put the garlic,
a quarter of the oil and the egg in a blender and mix
on full power until well mixed. Then add another
quarter of the oil and mix. Finally, add the remaining
oil and a splash of lemon juice. Mix well until thick
and creamy.
¡Buen provecho!
