MAY
WELCOME

Hola

Greetings from sunny Salamanca!

We figure you’re all knee deep in summer travel planning, at least we hope you are, and hope some of that travel involves brushing up your language skills in Spain or Latin America. We’re happy to do our part: You’ll find a quick guide to some great summer events in Spain in Discovering Spain, a schedule of our special summer dQ courses in dQ News and a few choice URLs to get you all the info you need on a few cities we recommend you visit while in Spain and Mexico.

All of that, with your monthly proverb, a bit of Spanish slang and a sizzling summer piropo.

We wish you the best! Enjoy your read. We’ll meet you back here in a month!

¡Hasta la próxima!
PROVERB
Determined to get what you want out of this summer, or this year, or your study of Spanish? Here’s a refrain to keep you motivated:

El que la sigue, la consigue.

Roughly translated, “He who goes after something,  gets it.” We might summarize this commonly heard Spanish saying this way: You get what you work for.

Tip: Malaga and Barcelona will also host special Picasso events during 2007.

BARCELONA: Grec Festival
What: 30th edition of Barcelona’s legendary Grec festival, with a enormous programme of more than 40 theatre, dance and music performances, from Hamlet and the Iliad,  to Maria del Mar Bonet,  flamenco and modern dance.
Where: Venues throughout Barcelona, many of them outdoors.
When: June 25  - August 6, 2006.
Tip: Short on time? Enjoy the festival and a dQ host family B&B during a Barcelona Weekend course.

cuadrito.jpg Do a UNESCO World Heritage cities tour while you learn Spanish: From Madrid visit nearby Alcalá de Henares, Segovia and Toledo; Study in Salamanca’s World Heritage historic centre while you travel easily to Ávila and Cáceres; From your base in Granada or Seville, discover Córdoba’s breathtaking old quarter…. The possibilities are many: Spain is home to more UNESCO World Heritage cities than any other country, except one.

Tapas!
During the next few issues, we’ll bring you a few classic tapa recipes. You could invite a few friends to sample a new tapa each month, or save the recipes for an all-out Tapas Party (strictly Spanish-speaking, we hope) at summer’s end. This month’s recipe comes from a bar in Madrid. We recommend you wash down your tostadas de setas with an nice cold caña

(beer) or a tasty Spanish red. Enjoy!

Ingredients
4 or 5 ounces mushrooms (wild if you can find them), stems removed and sliced thin
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
A pinch of sea salt
1 tsp sherry wine
Alioli (garlic mayonnaise)
French bread, sliced into rounds

Method
Heat the olive oil in a pan that has a cover. When the oil is hot, add the mushrooms, salt and sherry. Cover, and lower heat. Cook until liquid is released from the mushrooms, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Toast bread slightly, just to dry it out. Spread with alioli and top with mushrooms. Broil for 30 seconds or until alioli starts to bubble.

Serve and savour the taste of Spain!
