MARCH
WELCOME

...to don Quijote’s monthly newsletter for March, 2006!

It’s a warm, early Spring day in Salamanca as we prepare to send you your monthly Spanish news. Our minds are on blue skies, Mediterranean beaches, and water sports… all well represented by the Spanish city in our monthly spotlight – Valencia.

Valencia will host the America’s Cup finals in 2007; in fact this Spring you’ll have 3 opportunities to see America’s Cup international sailing regattas in Valencia. Yet Valencia offers you much more than sun and sea. More all the time, in fact. Valencia has become a tourism ‘Wunderkind’: More growth than any other Spanish destination from 2001 to present, and more growth than any European destination during 2005, and during the 15 previous years! We’ll tell you a bit about Valencia in Discovering Spain, and a bit about our exciting new school location in Valencia in dQ News.

Add a tasty traditional recipe, Arroz a la Banda, along with a classic proverb and a drop of slang, and you’ve got the stew we call your don Quijote Monthly Newsletter.
May you enjoy your monthly virtual visit, and may you soon find yourself enjoying blue and sunny skies!

¡Hasta la próxima!

PROVERB
A nautical proverb, this month, as appropriate for intrepid language learners as it is for the America’s Cup challengers:

Quién no se arriesga, no pasa el mar.
Directly translated: he who doesn’t take a risk, doesn’t cross the sea.
Rather close to “nothing ventured, nothing gained”, in English, isn’t it?

Very close, and also very true, in our opinion!

WHAT’S ON IN...

Valencia is truly an “up and comer” in the European tourism market. And no wonder. Valencia offers tourist attractions, beach holidays, cruises, and sports outings, backed by a fascinating and profound cultural heritage, some of Spain’s best known fiestas (Las Fallas, La Tomatina) wonderful gastronomy, and first class recreational facilities. This year the city unveiled a new music venue,  the ‘Palau de les

Arts’, which will host operas, musicals, and other events.

Yet undoubtedly one of Valencia’s most exciting attractions at the moment is her role as host of the 32nd America’s Cup. The Cup is the World Cup of team sailing, you might say, and the oldest international sport trophy in the world. Valencia has been invaded by international competitors (with 11 countries sending teams), international press, and international visitors. And she’s rolled out the red carpet for all of them. It’s an exciting time to visit Valencia!

Combine a Spanish course with a first hand look at America’s Cup racing. Sound tempting? Valencia will host Act 10 (May 11-18),  Act 11 (May 19-21) and Act 12 (June 23-July 3) of the America’s Cup this Spring. Visit http://www.americascup.com for more information. In English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Arroz a Banda (Rice with seafood)

Ingredients (serves 4)
1 kg assorted seafood (a variety of fresh fish and shellfish)
1 onion, peeled and chopped
saffron, to taste
arroz.jpg
1 teaspoon paprika
1 laurel leaf
1 clove of garlic
1 tablespoon of pureed tomato
500g of rice
1.5 L water
Salt
Olive oil

Method
Place the water, all of the seafood,  the onion, the laurel and a little salt in a pot. Bring to a boil and cook 20 minutes.
Drain and set aside the broth. You should have 1 litre of broth.
Prepare a paste by chopping and crushing the garlic, then mixing it with the saffron and a little salt. Dissolve the paste in a bit of the broth.
Put a paellera (paella pan or a similar pan) on the fire and add the oil to the pan. When the oil is hot, add the tomato puree, the spice paste, and the paprika. Stir and let the mixture cook slowly for 3 or 4 minutes.
Add the rice and mix well, so that it is coated with the sauce.
Add the hot seafood broth you put aside. Cook for 4 minutes over a  high flameand another 15 minutes over a low flame. Add salt to taste.
Remove from the flame, let stand 5 minutes and serve directly from the paellera. Serve alongside the boiled seafood.
