The US Latin community has been gaining strength for a long time. Some immigrants in this community may be marginalized for their illegal status, but the great majority have achieved social acceptance and are recognized as hard workers. Under the term "Latin", we can distinguish groups of many different origins: Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Columbians and, of course, the largest group of the US Latin community: the Mexicans. Let's meet some of the country's most prominent Mexican American figures.

Salma Hayek

Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez, known commonly as simply Salma Hayek, is a Hollywood actress and business woman who was born in Mexico in 1966. Today, she is one of the most influential Latin actresses in the USA. Although Salma began her career in the world of soap operas, she gained fame after appearing alongside Antonio Banderas in the movie Desperadoby Robert Rodriguez. The same director would bring the two actors together for several other movies: Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Four Rooms and Spy Kids. Hayek would also appear in the film From Dusk Till Dawn, another film by Rodriguez.

Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas became great friends. Through Banderas, Hayek also became friends with Penelope Cruz, with whom she filmed the movie Bandidas.

Robert Rodríguez

Born in San Antonio, Texas in 1968, Robert Rodriguez is one of the most famous directors of independent films; like his friend Quentin Tarantino. Robert Rodriguez directed his first film, El Mariachi, on a budget of only $7,000. The film went on to receive critical acclaim at the Sundance Festival. He went on to direct films like Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, the three parts of Spy Kids, Planet Terror, Machete and others.

Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo was born in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California in 1944. He is an actor of Mexican origin that has earned his fame by hard work. With humble beginnings in California, Danny Trejo eventually fell into drug addiction and ended up behind bars. When he gained his freedom, the Mexican American began to work in the film industry. In the majority of his roles, Danny Tejo portrays criminals. The actor has also participated with Robert Rodriguez as a supporting actor in various films and as the star actor in the film Machete.

Fergie and Taboo (Black Eyed Peas)

Fergie and Taboo, two of the members of the band Black Eyed Peas, are also of Mexican descent. Fergie's great grandfather was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, although the artist does not consider herself to be Latin because, as she has explained, other musicians have much more Latin blood than she, and therefore are better representatives of this community. Taboo is the artistic name of Jaime Luis Gomez. Born in California, he is son to a Mexican immigrant father and a mother of Native American decent, from the Shoshone tribe.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is a famous actress of Mexican descent on her father's side, Mark Alba. She began her career at the early age of 12, appearing in the movie Camp Nowhere in 1994. The same year, Jessica Alba began to appear in the television series The Secret World of Alex Mack and later Flipper. She would go on to land roles in films like Venus Rising, Idle Hands, Sin City, Fantastic Four, and many others.

Edward Furlong

Edward Furlong, from Glendale, California, is of Mexican descent from his mother's side. He made his debut in the film Terminator 2: The Judgement Day. In 1999 he participated alongside Edward Norton in one of the most successful independent films in history: American History X.

Selena Gómez de Trespalacios

Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas. She is part Italian from her mother's side and Mexican from her father's side. She became famous as part of the pop music group Selena Gomez & The Scene. She has also appeared in various movies and television shows.

Anthony Quinn

Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca, known as Anthony Quinn, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. His father was half Irish and half Mexican while his mother was of Aztec descent. The belated Anthony Quinn had a successful film career during which he earned two Oscars. Due to his heavy build and height, Anthony Quinn was chosen for many tough and mafia type roles, usually portraying a Mexican or Native American. In addition to being a talented actor, Quinn was also known as a painter and sculptor; hobbies which he practiced a lot over his last years.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria, undoubtedly one of the most popular Latin faces in the US, was born in Corpus Christi in Nueces County, Texas. Longoria's family has lived in the Texas region for many generations, since before it was part of the USA. Although the Mexican American actress came from a humble background, today she is a very influential figure among the Latin community. She rose to fame mainly due to her starring role as Gabrielle Solis in the American TV series Desperate Housewives.
