The World Heritage Committee has inscribed properties of Spain and Latin America on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List. To be included on this list, sites must meet the selection criteria detailed in the "Operational Guidelines", the World Heritage Committee's main document. The criteria which is revised regularly by the Committee, is constantly evolving to match the evolution of the World Heritage concept itself:
“To encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritages around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity”
Cultural heritage refers to monuments, buildings and sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological, scientific, ethnological or anthropological value.
Natural heritage refers to outstanding physical, biological or geological features and includes habitats of threatened species, as well as areas with scientific, environmental or aesthetic value.
Mixed heritage sites have both cultural and natural values.
Nevertheless, all of them share one common factor designed by UNESCO, and that is to make sure that future generations can inherit the treasures of the past.
