Happy Birthday Songs in Spanish

Happy Birthday in Spanish

Cumpleaños feliz is the Spanish version of Happy Birthday to You, a song that is traditionally sung at birthday celebrations.

Happy Birthday lyrics in English:

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear (NAME)
Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday is one of the most famous songs in the world and is usually heard to celebrate the anniversary of one’s birth. Happy Birthday to You originated from a song called Good Morning to All which was written in the English language by Patty and Mildred Hill in 1893. The song, however, has since been translated into many languages and is used at birthday parties in many other countries and cultures. Within the Spanish language there are many variations to the Happy Birthday or Cumpleaños Feliz song. Here are some examples:

Happy Birthday lyrics in Spain:

Cumpleaños feliz
Cumpleaños feliz
Te deseamos todos
Cumpleaños feliz

Happy Birthday lyrics in Venezuela:

Cumpleaños feliz.
Te deseamos a ti
Cumpleaños (NAME),
Cumpleaños feliz.

Happy Birthday lyrics in Argentina:

Que los cumplas feliz.
Que los cumplas feliz
Que los cumplas (NAME),
Que los cumplas feliz.

The Happy Birthday to You song was copyrighted in 1935, but the rights will expire in 2030 in the USA and in Europe in 2016. Technically, unauthorized performances of the Happy Birthday song are illegal. Other countries have declared the song as a public song.

In addition to the translated versions of the Happy Birthday song, many countries also have their own traditional birthday song. In Spain, another common song to celebrate birthdays is called Feliz en tu día (Happy on your day). The lyrics are:

Feliz, feliz en tu día
amiguito que Dios te bendiga
que reine la paz en tu vida
y que cumplas muchos más

In Mexico they sing a traditional birthday song called Las mañanitas (Mornings):

There are also many different birthday customs that differs lightly from Anglo-Saxon cultures. For example, in Spain “ear-pulling” is a common practice on someone´s birthday. Friends or family members will often pull the birthday boy or girl’s ear as many times as corresponds to their new age. Another tradition is that the person whose birthday it is usually pays for meals or drinks if they go out with friends or family to celebrate.

As in most places, birthdays in Spain and Latin America are special days especially for children who often throw parties. They are a great excuse to get together with friends and family to celebrate friendship, love and life.
