Salsa is one of the few Latin American dances that has gained and maintained worldwide popularity. It was originally accompanied by music known as Cuban son which is a fusion of Spanish guitar and song with African percussion. However over time this popular dance has been heavily influenced by the music from other Latin American countries as well as the American jazz. Salsa dance has its own set of choreographed steps with movements that are in complete natural harmony making it not only energetic, but also beautiful and sensual.

According to its first dancers, musicians and composers, Salsa is an umbrella term that refers to many different Cuban and Latin American rhythms: la guaracha, el guaguancó, mambo, chachachá and most of all, the son Montuno. Since all of these styles were extremely difficult to differentiate, the single term "salsa" was coined in the 1970's to refer to all of these musical styles as a collective.
