Cuando queremos elegir entre cosas de distinto tipo, usamos Qué
(When we want to choose between different kinds of things we use Qué)

–¿Qué te gustaría para tu cumpleaños?
– Una película
(Podría haber elegido una fiesta, una película, un viaje, etc. Es decir, cosas de distinto tipo)
(you could have chosen a party, a movie, a trip, etc. That is, different kinds of things).

Cuando queremos elegir entre cosas del mismo tipo usamos Qué + nombre or Cuál + verbo or Cuál + de + nombre
(When we have to choose between the same kind of things we use Qué + the noun of the kind or Cuál + verb or Cuál + de + noun)

¿Qué película prefieres? or ¿ Cuál prefieres? or ¿ Cuál de todas las películas prefieres?
(Puedes elegir entre una película u otra, pero es algo del mismo tipo, de la misma categoría: películas)
(You choose between one movie or another, but it is within the same category: movies)
