Concierto de Lila Downs
Group: The Seattle Spanish Society
Who: Buena Gente
Description: Igual que los otros conciertos, nos juntamos para cenar y despues nos vamos al concierto. Para los que no conozcan a lila downs, visiten su pagina de internet, los conciertos anteriores se han puesto muy buenos, aqui abajo los detalles. The Moore Theatre Thursday September 25, 2008 8:00pm $27.50 (not including fees) www.liladowns.com Singer Lila Downs grew up with the culture of her father, a professor from the United States, but eventually turned her back on it to explore the tradition of her mother, a Mixteca Indian from Mexico. In doing so, she has created a very individual strain of song that has indigenous Mexican roots and North American sonorities. Born in 1968, she spent her early years in Mexico, but after her parents split up, she was shuffled off to live with a relative in California. She grew to love music, specifically classical and opera, and began studying those in college. After two years, however, she experienced a crisis, questioning why she was singing and dropping out to become a Deadhead, following the Grateful Dead around the country in a VW bus and earning money by making and selling jewelry, and not singing at all. Although not particularly moved by the Dead's music, she enjoyed the lifestyle for a short time, before heading back to college in Minnesota, where her father lived. When she finally graduated, it was with a double degree, in anthropology and voice, and a renewed enthusiasm for both her Mexican heritage and singing. Settling in her mother's hometown of Oaxaca, she began vocalizing again, and exploring her roots, while realizing that she was still half Yankee. She met up with Philadelphia-based jazz pianist Paul Cohen, and the pair began a professional and personal relationship whose first fruit was the self-released, cassette-only Ofrenda in 1994. That was followed two years later by another cassette, the live Azuláo: En Vivo con Lida Downs, one of whose songs won Best Original Latin Jazz composition in a Philadelphia poll. Along with jazz, she was slowly developing a more intense, folkloric style that began to rear its head on 1997's La Sandunga (released in the U.S. on BMG in 1999), whose title track and "La Llorana" offered a hearty passion not to be heard on her jazzier efforts. That vocal promise was fulfilled in 2000 with the release of Tree of Life, the lyrics of which were largely derived from the religious codices of the Mixteca and Zapotec people. The album was recorded in Oaxaca, where Downs and Cohen were sustained by a foundation grant, although their home base remains Mexico City. The next year, Downs issued Border (La Linea). In 2004 Una Sangre (One Blood) was released, followed by 2006's La Cantina, whose song "La Cumbia del Mole" presented the singer the opportunity to make her first-ever music video.

The Marvel and Measure of Peru: Three Centuries of Visual History, 1550-1880
Group: The Los Angeles Spanish Language Meetup Group
Who: Spanish Speakers
Description: When Francisco Pizarro and his fellow Spanish conquistadors first encountered Peru in 1524, they were shocked by the wholly unfamiliar world. The people, flora, fauna, topography, and cities begged for description and communication back to Europe. This exhibition explores the ways that artists depicted Peru and the new visual categories for classifying information they developed. In conveying the characteristics and history of Peru over the first three centuries of its coexistence with European cultures, the image, accurate or not, was more powerful than text. Images took root in the imagination, defining the region and its cultural identities for the outside world. Knowledge of the exotic New World was compiled and spread through many genres of literature such as costume and botanical books, biographical anthologies, atlases, and travel accounts that were often inaccurate. Fanciful visions of this world persisted alongside more scientific observations until late in the 19th century, even after the new medium of photography seemed to capture life with absolute verisimilitude. I believe that if we can get a group of 15 people or more, we may request a docent tour. Admission to the Getty Center is FREE?no tickets or reservations required for general admission. Parking is $8. Ideally we can meet somewhere outside of the Getty and carpool in as parking is $8 per car. Para mas detalles visite el siguiente enlace: http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/peru/

Spainish Movie Event! " Vicky Cristina Barcelona"
Group: SPANISH LANGUAGE AND LATIN CULTURE GROUP
Who: Spanish Speakers
Description: VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is a sexy, funny film with Javier Barden starring as a bohemian artist involved variously with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall, pic offers potent romantic fantasy that should be the best Woody Allen film since "Match Point." And the other star is Barcelona. The women after spotting Juan Antonio (Bardem) at an art gallery, the two beauties are approached by the confident bearded painter in a swank restaurant with the disarmingly blunt offer of joining him in a small town for a weekend of art, food and sex. Cruz, who officially graduated from sex kitten to powerhouse melodramatic actress in "Volver," is in full mode here, storming up and down mountain peaks of emotion and captivating everyone in the process. Allen even generates affectionate comic mileage from the common rap on Cruz's acting--that she's great in Spanish but blah in English--by having her deliver colorful tirades in her native language, only to be told again and again by Juan Antonio to speak English so Cristina can understand her. She's dynamite here in either language. "Vicky Cristina Barcelona? is by several degrees more hot-blooded than Woody Allen?s usual norm, thanks especially due to the palpable chemistry of Bardem and Cruz in the second half. Cine bajo las estrellas--El Orfanato
Group: The Long Beach Spanish Language Meetup Group
Who: Spanish Speakers
Description: Movie night and potluck at Rose Towers is back! Last summer we featured 'Pan's Labyrinth' and had a great time socializing and sampling an amazing potluck feast beforehand. This year we are showing Juan Antonio Bayona's 'El Orfanato' or 'The Orphanage'. This Spanish film was produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and is a classic horror film similar to 'The Others' and 'The Sixth Sense'. For more info on the film, go to www.theorphanagemovie.com. We'll start off the evening with an al fresco potluck dinner in the courtyard patio of Rose Towers, a historic Andalutian-inspired complex in the Alamitos Beach neighborhood of Long Beach. Come early and carpool (or bike, walk or bus if you are nearby in Long Beach) as street parking is at a premium here. Bring your favorite dish and or drink to share with the group and $2 for the Meetup fee. Nos vemos!

We will be meeting at the Fox Hotel at the tables at street level. In case of rain or no space no doubt you will find us inside.

Who: Buena Gente
Description: COMO ME VOY DE VACACIONES Y VOY A ESTAR MUY OCUPADO EN EL TRABAJO ANTES DE IRME, ENTONCES NO VOY A ALCANZAR A VER LO DE LAS RESERVACIONES HASTA QUE REGRESE DE VACACIONES, LA FECHA PARA AGREGARSE CAMBIA Y SE PUEDEN AGREGAR HASTA EL DOMINGO 24 DE AGOSTO. Our very first Oktoberfest was held in October 1998 which was attended by about 400 people. The next year about 1700 people attended the festival, and a band was brought in from Germany. The festival continued to grow each year and in 2003, a second weekend was added and two bands were brought in from Germany in addition to many performers from the US. By 2005 attendance had grown to 10,000, and the Leavenworth festival was ranked as one of the top Oktoberfest celebrations in the country. The Montreal Spanish Language September Meetup
Group: The Montreal Spanish Language Meetup Group
Who: Spanish Speakers
Description: Hola!!! I think this is a good place to meet with this kind of group, I will go back there to hold the Meetups for a little while! (Until I find another great place!!!) ... Believe me, it is VERY difficult to find a good place to meet with a large group ... There are cafes, teas, other drinks, as well as a great variety of food!!! VERY EASY TO FIND: Right across the street from the Eaton Center/Les Ailes de la Mode, next to Guido & Angelina's ... don't be afraid to go down the stairs, you'll discover a quaint little restaurant!!! Very accessible coming from McGill Metro Station ... See you soon!!! Maryse :) N.B.: I have decided to limit the number of attendees; it is much easier to manage the group this way. So RSVP soon to reserve your spot and MAKE SURE you can attend if you RSVP "YES" ... out of courtesy for other members of our group ... YOU MUST RSVP ... it is the only way for me to know who will be there and reserve enough spaces ... Gracias! :) I can understand that plans can change, but if you can't come to the Meetup anymore PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHANGE YOUR RSVP to "NO" ... Muchas gracias! Thank you. P.S.: Muchas gracias a los hispano-hablantes por ayudarnos! :-)
