Common mistakes in Spanish Words and Phrases

In all languages there are some words that lead to mistakes in writing or use due to their similarity in pronunciation. Since this problem also exists in Spanish, we have prepared a selection of 100 words that frequently present problems to help you improve your Spanish. Remember that you can also consult our data base of "Spanish Words" (word of the day) to expand your vocabulary.

Los monarcas / los soberanos:
This usage is incorrect when referring together to the king and queen (the married couple) of a given country.
"Monarca" only refers to the person who is the head of state, whether king or queen. The same is true of the word "soberano".
Example:
La ceremonia estaba presidida por el monarca y su consorte.

Beis / beige:
The Royal Academy accepts both forms, though "beis" is preferred.
Example:
Me gusta esa falda beis.

Y / E:
We use y to join two words or clauses, but if the word following "y" begins with "i-" or "hi-" we change the y to e.
Example:
Incorrect: *Vinieron Juan y Irene.
The correct form is: Vinieron Juan e Irene.
