The weather in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen has a sub-tropical climate, meaning that it is very warm - if not hot - all throughout the year. The year-round average temperature in the area is 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) and the humidity is very high (mostly around 90 percent).
Spring comes to Playa del Carmen in February and typically lasts until mid-May. This is a lovely time of the year wherein bright and colorful flowers can be seen everywhere and the ocean begins turning lukewarm and calmer. Summer arrives in June and normally lasts until August. At this time, it becomes really hot although the ocean is at its calmest and clearest. Hurricanes and tropical storms normally occur during the months of September and October. And finally, cool and comfortable weather is generally experienced from November to January.
The rainy season is by and large expected throughout the latter part of May until October. This is usually characterized by frequent tropical showers (which does not last very long) in the late afternoon. From June to August, the humidity becomes particularly high, although the temperature does not normally exceed 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit).
What to pack for your trip to Playa del Carmen depends on what time of the year you plan to go. If you plan to go during the warmer months, it is also advisable to bring light and airy clothes in cotton or linen. It would also be smart to bring hats, sunglasses and sandals. Since the sun and the heat in this area can be pretty intense, it would be best to always keep yourself protected by drinking lots of water and loading up on the sunscreen. If you plan to go during the cooler months, you can still pack clothes for warm weather although packing an additional light jacket or shawl may prove helpful.
