Colombia is a country rich in diversity; its society is made up of many ethnic groups, the largest being the mestizo population – a racial mix of European and native population. Colombia is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, and it also counts about sixty-five indigenous languages.

Over the centuries Colombia has developed its own unique identity, aided by its geographical location at the border of Central and South America. Like much of Latin America, Catholicism is the country’s predominant religion, practiced by 90% of the population. As such, many of its public holidays have a religious meaning, although there are six civic holidays too. The multitude of holidays, festivals and carnivals make for an exciting culture, in which the people are very welcoming and cheerful.

Among its most popular national dishes are sancocho, a type of soup; arepa, a sort of sandwich and bandeja paisa, a traditional meat platter. You can discover the intricacies of society in Colombia here, learning all there is to know about this fascinating country!
