Looking for great places to surf in the Riviera Maya? There are great Cancun surf spots, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and all along the Yucatan. The Riviera Maya and Cancun area is one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico and in the world. The location, on the east side of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, boasts a mild climate and warm sandy white beaches that make it an ideal destination to practice water sports in the Caribbean Sea. However, for those determined to find a Cancun surf spot, the best option is Playa Delfines, sometimes called Playa del Mirador. The best surfing in Cancun occurs here, although surfers may have to be patient between swells. Other beaches in the Riviera Maya with stronger surf include the Tulum beaches, located south of the Riviera Maya beyond Puerto Morelos, and Playa Marlin located in the hotel zone of Cancun. Additionally, there are several schools located in Cancun where you can learn to surf or practice other water sports.

The Riviera Maya is a wonderful geographic location to practice kite surfing, also known as fly surf, kite surf, kite boarding and kite skiing. Kite surfing consists of surfing on a board propelled by a large kite and the wind. The large beaches, light sea traffic and smooth waves make the region that begins in Puerto Morelos and includes the famous Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum an excellent location to practice the extreme sport of kite surfing.

There are many specialized kite surfing schools in the Riviera Maya with certified instructors who can teach advanced or beginning kite surfing courses. This water sport is becoming very popular in the Riviera Maya, where conditions are favorable to learn and practice kite surfing in places like Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum and to the south of Cancun in Puerto Morelos. Whether you are an amateur or expert, you will find the perfect kite surfing destination in the Riviera Maya.

The moderate surf of the Riviera Maya is also perfect for a wide range of other water activities including sailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, swimming, fishing and scuba diving. For recreational water sports in Cancun, head to beaches with moderate surf: Playa Las Perlas, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas and Playa Chac Mool.
