Spanish Literature: La Regenta - Leopoldo Alas

Leopoldo Alas "Clarín"

Leopoldo Alas, also known as "Clarín", was a great Spanish novelist of the nineteenth century. Alas was born in 1852 to an Asturian family in Zamora and his father was a civil governor. In 1863 the family settled in Oviedo, a city that would become, in some way, the protagonist of his masterpiece. “La Regenta” was the first novel by Leopoldo Alas, published in two volumes in 1884 and 1885 respectively. The first part of the novel introduces Vetusta - the name Leopoldo Alas used to describe the city of Oviedo.
