International Film Festival in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a fairly intimate connection with the world of movies and film. In early 1961, American film director John Huston decided to shoot his film The Night of the Iguana, an adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, in and around Puerto Vallarta. A lot of controversy and publicity surrounded the affair of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the stars of movie. Due of this, Puerto Vallarta found itself suddenly catapulted into the limelight.

The city has grown in popularity since then and has retained a steady association and following among celebrities, especially with those from Hollywood. The National Geographic Magazine recently included the city in the list of the top 50 film locations of the world.

As a tribute to Puerto Vallarta's affiliation with the movie and film, the city established the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival, an annual international event supported by the family of the late John Huston. Movie stars, producers, filmmakers, directors and fans flock to Puerto Vallarta from all over the world to become part of the festivities. For one whole week, the city plays host to variety of motion picture screenings, conferences, galas, art expos, free concerts and a whole lot more. This festival showcases contemporary full-length films and documentaries from North and South America with a focus on independent films and those with environmental themes.

The most important part of the whole festival is the Gala Closing Awards ceremony, which honors remarkable members of the industry. Certain awards are named after Hollywood personalities who have made an impact on Puerto Vallarta, such as the John Huston Maverick Awards for Best Film and Best Director, the Richard Burton Thespian Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, and the Elizabeth Taylor Humanitarian Award.

On some rare occasions, filmmakers talk to the audience in the lobby of the theater after a screening of their movie. Movie enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the International Film Festival in Puerto Vallarta!
