City of Bogota

Bogota, Colombia was once considered a place to avoid but has since greatly improved its safety and infrastructure making it a new hot spot in Latin America.

The city has a population of over 7 million people making it the largest in Colombia and the third largest in Latin America. Bogota has become the industrial, political, economic and financial center of the country and Colombians looking for opportunities flock to the city in search of opportunities. Its location in the geographic center of Colombia makes Bogota a great option from which to explore the rest of the country.

Over the last several decades tourism to Bogota has greatly increased thanks to the District Institute of Tourism which set out to improve the city´s image and create sustained tourism to the city through aggressive publicity, security and infrastructure campaigns.

Today, the city of Bogota offers tourists beautiful churches, wonderful museums, lovely parks, varied gastronomy, lively cultural events and an active nightlife.

Many travelers focus the majority of their time on the historic area known as La Candelaria. La Candelaria is known for being a pleasant area dotted with cafés, museums and churches perfect for culture and art lovers. Located not far is Cerro Monserrate, a sightseeing point reached by cable car by which visitors can get stunning views of the city.

Northern Bogota provides a stark contrast to La Candelaria as it is the modern part of the capital filled with tall buildings and businesses.

Bogota has also worked hard to become a cultural leader in South America and has earned several awards for its efforts. With 58 museums, many libraries, 62 art galleries, 75 sports/amusement parks, 150 national monuments and 45 theatres, it is not hard to see why.

While the city may not enchant visitors upon first glance, if visitors take the time to explore its many charming areas and cultural offerings, Bogota will give tourists so much more than meets the eye.
