STUDENT PROFILE

Our Volunteer Programs are aimed at students seeking to learn Spanish in the framework of an experience with social impact. The majority have either already completed one of our intensive Spanish courses or are signed up to take one during their volunteer program.

They are interested in issues such as cultural heritage, ecology, fair trade, and sustainability, and want to participate in activities together with the local community of their destination. This experience will give them the opportunity to use their Spanish to communicate in everyday situations.

Benefits

Our Volunteer Programs give you a global perspective on the various environmental, political, and social issues facing Latin America. This program is offered in combination with our Intensive Spanish courses.

Contribute to environmental and ecological conservation by participating in toucan recovery programs or volunteering with pets in an animal shelter, work together with indigenous communities, or get involved in education and medical care for people young and old, all while continuing to practice Spanish with native speakers.

Programs

Playa del Carmen

Are you curious to know what a day in the life at an animal shelter is like? At SOS EL ARCA shelter you will collaborate in different activities such as cleaning the crates, feeding the animals, and taking them out for their daily walk. If you wish, you can also play with the dogs in the designated courtyard. You do not need any prior knowledge, you just need to like animals and be willing to help!

Oaxaca

If you enjoy helping others and want the opportunity to volunteer in Oaxaca, this is the perfect fit for you. You can choose between three different centers to complete your volunteer hours. At the “Los Tamayo” nursing home, you will accompany the elderly in mental and physical stimulation exercises. At “Procasa” you will volunteer with underprivileged children, lending a hand in a multi-faceted program that includes help with homework, comprehensive hygiene, psychological support, and recreational activities. You can also volunteer at "Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots," where you will collaborate in different social and educational activities.

Santo Domingo de Heredia

In the Toucan Rescue Ranch, volunteers are divided into two teams. The first team works in the kitchen, where the toucans' food is prepared: you will chop fruit, cook vegetables, and other food preparation tasks. The second team will work outside with toucans and collect and replace trays of food while serving water and cleaning the areas where the birds live.

Quito

If you are a native English speaker, you can take advantage of your stay in Quito and teach children with limited economic resources. This program lasts four weeks, two hours a day from Monday to Friday. You will put the teaching methodology you learn into practice by teaching English classes. A valuable experience that will help you develop your teaching skills in a real environment while you get socially involved.

If you are a nursing or medical student or professional, we also have a minimum four-week medical volunteering program at Clínica Cemedsso.

The island of Tenerife is incredible. There’s so much to do, you can enjoy life in the city or get away from it all by going on a beautiful hike or taking it easy on the beach. Learning Spanish here at don Quijote was a dream come true. The teachers were very patient with me, and every day I felt a bit more comfortable speaking in Spanish. Now I can have real conversations in a new language, which will open doors for me the future.

CLARA (STUDENT - TENERIFE)

Being in Seville really makes you feel alive. It’s bursting with vibrant colors and animated conversations, there’s just something in the air. Being immersed in such a rich culture makes every day a truly unique experience. The teachers at don Quijote helped me soak up all the Spanish I could during class, then I would go out and put everything I’d learned into practice over tapas, sitting on a terrace with my new friends. I love the Andalusian accent!

ALESSANDRA (STUDENT - SEVILLE)

I never thought I’d meet so many people from so many different countries. The classes at don Quijote are very international, plus there’s a great student atmosphere in Salamanca thanks to the famous university. I picked up a lot of Spanish words and phrases just by talking with locals. My roommates and I also put sticky notes all around the apartment to help us remember our new vocabulary. The city itself was great, you can see the most incredible architecture just walking to the supermarket. I can’t believe how much I learned, both in class and in the real world. I would definitely recommend studying at don Quijote in Salamanca.

PAUL (STUDENT - SALAMANCA)

What better place to learn Spanish than right on the Mediterranean coast? There’s nothing like having an authentic paella on the beach! Valencia was everything I imagined and more. Studying at don Quijote took me out of my comfort zone and gave me the courage to speak Spanish and interact on another level. When you study in Spain, you learn more than just the language: you interact with the locals and they show you their traditions and way of life.
